Soft or Crunchy Dog Treats: Which Is Better for Your Dog?
Soft or crunchy dog treats? If you have ever stood in front of the treat cabinet wondering which one your dog would actually prefer, the answer is pretty simple: it depends on your dog and what you are using the treat for.
Texture can matter just as much as flavor. Some dogs love the satisfying crunch of a biscuit. Others do better with something softer and easier to break apart. Puppies, senior dogs, picky eaters and dogs with sensitive teeth can all have different preferences, which is why there is no single texture that wins for every pup.
When are soft dog treats a good choice?
Soft treats can be especially handy when you want something that is easy to chew or easy to portion. They can work well for puppies learning how treat time works, senior dogs who may not want to tackle a hard biscuit, and dogs who simply prefer a softer bite.
They are also easy to break into smaller pieces, which can be useful when you want several little rewards without handing over a full treat every time.
That is exactly where Berry Dawgnuts come in. They are Buff Cake Barkery's soft blueberry dog treat, made with real blueberries, almond flour, organic oat flour, flaxseed and honey. They are baked fresh and refrigerated, giving dogs a completely different texture from our crunchy treats.

When are crunchy dog treats a good choice?
Some dogs are firmly on Team Crunch. Crunchy treats are a great everyday option when your dog enjoys a biscuit with a little more texture, and they are convenient to keep on hand for regular treat time.
At Buff Cake Barkery, our crunchy lineup gives you a few different ingredient and flavor options. Pumped Up PB Pumpkin combines pumpkin and peanut butter with organic oat flour, flaxseed and honey. Pawfect Apple Treats use real apple with organic oat flour, Ceylon cinnamon, flaxseed and honey. Barkin BB Crunch brings together blueberries and bananas, while Buff Nutter Bones are our classic peanut butter option.
You can see all four together in our Crunchy Dog Treats collection.
Are soft treats better for puppies?
Not automatically. A puppy can enjoy either texture as long as the treat is appropriate for them and easy for them to eat safely. The advantage of a soft treat is that you can usually break it into small pieces quickly, which makes portioning simple when you are rewarding good behavior throughout the day.
Berry Dawgnuts are an easy Buff Cake option when you want that softer texture. If your puppy already loves a good crunch, one of our crunchy recipes may make just as much sense.
What about senior dogs?
This is where paying attention to your individual dog really matters. A senior dog who still happily crunches biscuits does not need to switch simply because of age. But if chewing harder treats has become less comfortable, a softer option can make treat time easier.
If you notice a sudden change in the way your dog chews, eats or approaches food, that is worth discussing with your veterinarian rather than assuming it is simply part of getting older.
What if my dog has a sensitive stomach?
Texture is only one part of choosing a treat. The ingredient list matters too. If your dog tends to have digestive issues, start by looking at what is actually in the treat and which ingredients your dog already tolerates well.
We have a separate guide on how to choose dog treats for a sensitive stomach if that is the bigger question you are trying to solve.
