Before sharing peanut butter with your dog, read the ingredient list and make sure it does not contain xylitol, sometimes called birch sugar. Xylitol is toxic to dogs and can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar. If you think your dog has eaten something containing xylitol, contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary service right away.
That is the nonnegotiable part. Once xylitol is off the table, simpler peanut butter is generally the better choice. Look for straightforward ingredients and remember that peanut butter is calorie dense, so treats still count.
So how much peanut butter can a dog have?
Think treat, not food group. A lick on a spoon, a little in an enrichment toy, or peanut butter used as part of a dog treat can be plenty. Your dog's size, diet and health all matter, so dogs with dietary restrictions or medical conditions should follow their veterinarian's guidance.
