Little Ways We’re Growing Buff Cake Together
If there’s one thing we’ve learned in small business, it’s that doing what you love doesn’t always look like a tidy Hallmark movie.
Sometimes it’s late nights bagging treats in our dining room.
Sometimes it’s waking up before sunrise to pack the car for an event.
And sometimes it’s staring at a spreadsheet and wondering if I’ve finally lost it for good. (I haven’t. Yet.)
So much of Buff Cake Barkery has always been about showing up — at local markets, for your dog’s birthday order, at the little general store that knows your pup by name. And we’ll never stop doing that.
I’m sure you’ve seen the growth we’ve been working hard on - especially how it’s been fairly consistent over the past six months. From the outside, it might look like 24+ stores means we’re set for life (if only!). The reality is that having products on the shelf doesn’t guarantee a big payday every week or even every month in every store.
Growth in small businesses is a lot like training a puppy - it takes time, consistency, and patience to see the results. Each store relationship is something we nurture over time, and our success comes from keeping those shelves stocked, adding new locations when it makes sense, and finding extra ways to make Buff Cake sustainable through the natural ups and downs of the year.
A few of those extra ways came from customer suggestions.
One of our favorites? Treat subscriptions — a simple, no-fuss option for busy dog parents who never want to run out of their pup’s favorite snacks. And because every household (and every dog) is different, we now offer two subscription tiers to choose from. The best part? The discount automatically applies each month. It’s peace of mind for you and one less “oops, I’m out of treats” moment for your best friend.
And then there’s our BCB Crew Wear (formerly known as “Swag”) — a fun, comfy way for humans to rep the brand their dogs already love. We’ve dreamed about updating our line of shirts and hats for ages, but it had to feel right. When you sport our Crew gear, you’re not just wearing a brand; you’re helping more people discover what we’re about: quality treats, rescue dogs, supporting small shops, and staying true to our roots.
We also simplified what we offer. No more cups, pouches, or phone holders just for the sake of having them. If we can’t find quality options that align with our values, we’d rather wait until we can. The same goes for future items: if it’s not something we’d proudly use or wear ourselves, it doesn’t make the cut.
Every new idea, whether it’s a subscription or a shirt, is just another step in building something sustainable. Something that helps us keep the lights on, the mixers mixing, and our sanity mostly intact (we said mostly). It’s about growing Buff Cake in ways that make sense - so we can keep showing up for you and your pups for the long haul.
